Sand that stays cool
Siesta Key is a barrier island off Sarasota, reached by two bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway. Siesta Drive brings you to the north end and Siesta Key Village; Stickney Point Road lands you on the south end near Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach. The Census counted 5,454 people living on the key in 2020, down from 6,565 in 2010, and more than half of residents are 65 or older.
The beach is the reason most people cross the bridge. Visit Sarasota County describes the sand at Siesta Beach as nearly 100 percent quartz crystal and says it never gets hot under the Gulf Coast sun. Coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman, known as Dr. Beach, named it the best beach in America in 2011 and again in 2017, and Tripadvisor travelers ranked it No. 1 in the U.S. in 2015, 2017, 2020 and 2025.
The public beach park at 948 Beach Road has four colored lifeguard stands, a pavilion and free parking that fills fast in season. The water is shallow with small waves. On Sunday evenings the Siesta Key Drum Circle gathers near sunset, free and open to all, and further south Point of Rocks is the place to snorkel among colorful fish.
Village food and Gulf fish
Siesta Key Village, along Ocean Boulevard near the main beach, is where the island eats. The county tourism office lists oyster bars with live music, a tiki bar known for its clam chowder, a donut and coffee stop for after the beach, and waterfront seafood on Little Sarasota Bay. Most of it is casual, with sandy feet welcome.
Offshore, grouper is what most Siesta charter coolers are hoping for. The state's wildlife agency, the FWC, leaves red grouper open twelve months a year in Gulf waters inside the state line, with a 20 inch minimum and a cap of two per angler that counts toward a combined daily total of four groupers. Gag is a much shorter story: in 2026 the state matched the federal season and allowed gag only during September, then shut it again from October 1. Grouper anglers in Florida must also be enrolled in the State Reef Fish Survey before they go.
